  1. In the USA, the taking of personal property
  2. without consent and with the intention of
  3. permanently depriving the owner of it; theft.
  4. In the UK until 1827 larceny was divided into
  5. `grand larceny', punishable by death or
  6. transportation for life, and `petty larceny',
  7. when the stolen articles were valued at less
  8. than a shilling (one-twentieth of a pound;
  9. approximately two weeks' wages for a labourer
  10. at the time). In some US states, larceny in
  11. which the value of the property exeeds a
  12. specified amount is grand larceny; larceny
  13. involving lesser amounts is petty larceny.
